The best way to complete and document a New Jersey divorce is to have a formal agreement prepared by the lawyers, signed by the parties and presented to the Court on the day set for Final Hearing. Less formal procedures can be risky. Specifically, this case disapproves of the practice of placing the terms of settlement "on the record" and then annexing the transcript purporting to set forth the terms of the parties’ agreement.
