From driving to shopping to eating out, the punishing economy is changing the way we live. Now,  it's changing the way we divorce. Two trends are dominating divorce these days, according to statistics kept by the New Jersey Administrative Office of the Courts. New divorce filings in Morris County went down 11 % from July 2008 through June 2009. During the same period, reopening of divorce judgments went up by 8 % as those who have lost jobs or are earning less sought to reduce payments they could no longer meet.    Morristown Daily Record, October 26, 2009

MADISON MORRIS COUNTY NEW JERSEY DIVORCE LAWYER MEDIATOR

New Jersey has one of the country's lowest divorce rates. According to census figures released this week, the state's divorce rate in 2008 was 8.2 -- one percentage point above North Dakota for lowest in the country, and six points lower than Nevada, which clocked the highest percentage with 14.2. Three southern New Jersey counties ranked highest in the state for divorce rates. Atlantic and Cumberland counties saw 11 percent of adults divorced, with Salem County at 10 percent. Cape May and Ocean counties' divorce rates were 8 and 9 percent. In terms of marriage rate, southern New Jersey contains the highest and lowest counties in the state -- Cape May County scored 63 percent, while Cumberland County's marriage rate is 43 percent. Breaking up is hard to do in a recession. The number of new divorce cases filed in New Jersey during the first 6 months of 2009 fell 9 % compared with 2008. Family law experts say the 28,579 cases reflect economic uncertainty. Meanwhile, the number of divorce cases reopened as former spouses seek to revise alimony increased 6 percent in the first six months of the year. Officials say some Garden State couples are staying together until real estate and stock portfolios rebound.
