The chief judge of Union County, New Jersey just announced the suspension of all civil trials in July and August, citing dwindling ranks of judges. Assignment Judge Karen Cassidy's action echoes a measure taken by neighboring Essex County last year. The Union vicinage, already operating with 7 vacancies of 25 allotted seats, will lose more manpower when 4 judges recalled from retirement are away for periods of vacation. What's more, the 7 vacancies will grow to 9 when two tenured judges take early retirement this summer. New Jersey Law Journal, June 13, 2012
